Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Northwest Leon, Florida. If you're seeking a hair-based drug or alcohol evaluation, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this field, with testing sites across all major U.S. cities to conduct hair exams. Generally, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is needed. Hair samples can be examined for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or through personalized testing solutions.

In recent times, using hair follicle drug tests for substance screening has gained traction. Various employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists now prefer hair tests over conventional urine analyses. Hair assessments are favored by zero-tolerance employers, judiciary entities, and probationers. These tests offer a prolonged detection window, up to 90 days, involve a supervised sample collection, and are hardly possible to manipulate. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within a five-day span, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It provides a comprehensive historical record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to a roughly three-month detection period for substances. The collection process is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and shipping is convenient.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch sample of about 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional panels, or tests above 10 panels, a 150mg sample is preferred. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. By head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses everything else (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the lab's system. This step includes ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While it is an economical way to exclude drug use for the majority of samples, samples with a positive result require confirmation for court admissibility. Presumptive positives from Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

For samples with presumptive positives, more hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction stage. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of positive screening results is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test presumptively positive are washed before confirmation if needed. The whole process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify substance use for up to 90 days, compared to the shorter period for urine tests.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Hair drug tests are challenging to cheat, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Historical insight: They reveal drug use patterns over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically costs more than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Frequently called "hair follicle tests", these tests actually evaluate the hair strand instead of the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
