Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Old Town, Florida. For those in need of a hair or alcohol test, our specialty is hair testing, with locations across all cities nation-wide equipped to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required; hair from the head crown or body is used predominantly. Hair tests can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer specific customization options for other hair-based tests.

In the past years, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for identifying drug use. These tests are now frequently mandated by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals, preferring them over urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation use hair drug tests due to their extended detection span, around 90 days. Observed sample collection ensures accuracy and almost eliminates manipulation. Yet, urine tests remain the leading choice for detecting recent drug intake within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair retains a longer-term record of drug and alcohol biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. If collected near the scalp, hair can provide a detection timeline of approximately 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to obtain, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample, roughly 200 strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for both screening and verification. For EtG or additional tests over 10 panels, a 150mg sample is recommended. It's advisable to use a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. Should scalp hair be unobtainable, a similar quantity of body hair is acceptable. When mentioning head hair, it refers specifically to scalp hair. The term body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary handling of a sample as it enters a lab’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screenings offer a cost-efficient measure to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified for legal admissibility. Presumptive positive samples in Screening require a second confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are separated from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most challenging method to conduct.

Any positive findings from Screening are confirmed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, presumptive positive samples undergo washing if needed. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory procedure is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, compared to the shorter window of urine tests.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is challenging, rendering results more reliable.
  • Historical drug usage data: It provides a usage pattern over time rather than just recent habits.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Detection in hair takes about 5-7 days post-drug use.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to other testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Differences like hair color and individual growth rates can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not on the follicle underneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
