If scalp hair isn’t accessible, a comparable proportion of body hair may be taken. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the laboratory handling of a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial processing of a specimen into a lab’s system. It includes ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and sent, allotting a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any further data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an introductory rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug usage in the majority of specimens, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be permissible in legal settings. Any specimens that appear positive in Screening do require additional confirmation.

If a specimen appears positive at the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lesser concentration than in other procedures (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which renders hair drug analysis the most challenging procedure to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All specimens appearing positive are washed before confirmation where needed. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is monitored under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.
