Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Palm Beach Shores, Florida. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol tests, our centers are equipped to provide such tests Nationwide. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary, and both head and body hair are viable. Hair tests are suitable for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for custom testing preferences.

In recent years, the preference for drug screening has shifted towards hair follicle tests. This method is increasingly favored by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over standard urine tests. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, court mandates, and individuals on probation prefer hair follicle tests for their prolonged detection period. However, urine tests remain optimal for identifying recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a long-term record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection time frame of approximately three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easily transported.

A 1.5-inch segment with around 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in thickness) near the scalp provides 100mg, which is the preferred sample amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, the same quantity of body hair may be taken. Scalp hair solely references head hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing into the laboratory's system. This step includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, designating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any other data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for substance abuse. While cost-effective to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. Drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening more complex.

Positive screening confirmations are conducted with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed as necessary before confirmation. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike the shorter detection window of urine tests.
  • Cheating challenges: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical insight: It delivers a usage pattern over time, not just recent substance use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
