Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Palmona Park, Florida. If you require a drug or alcohol test involving hair analysis, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in this area, with centers available nationwide ready to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body suffices. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Over the past few years, the hair follicle drug test has become a more common method of drug testing. Employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse professionals are increasingly opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Used by employers with strict anti-drug policies, judicial systems, and those on probation, the key advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended drug detection window, up to 90 days. The test, conducted under supervision, is nearly impossible to tamper with. However, urine tests remain the most reliable choice for distinguishing recent drug use within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of substances by capturing biomarkers in the strands of the growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to about a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A standard 1.5-inch sample consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimum sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or more than 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the hair sample using a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair may be obtained. Head hair pertains specifically to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This process verifies that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplemental data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective means to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be legally admissible. Every sample that tests presumptively positive during Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive result at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which accounts for hair drug screening being a complex methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed as necessary prior to confirmation. The whole laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests can detect substances for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection timeline.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Provides usage patterns: It can illustrate a pattern of drug usage over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Costly: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher expenses than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors including hair color and personal hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Despite being commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the assessment is conducted on the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Palmona Park, FL, hair follicle testing presents distinct advantages over traditional urine tests. Its enhanced detection accuracy and reliability make it superior for drug screening. Hair analysis can identify substance use over months, unlike urine tests, which are limited to recent consumption. This wider detection window yields more comprehensive insights into a person's substance use history.

Choosing hair follicle testing over urine testing means embracing a more precise, robust method to understand drug consumption patterns. Unlike urine tests, hair tests minimize the risk of tampering, ensuring a truer reflection of individual behavior. Employers and institutions benefit from informed decision-making, resulting in safer, healthier environments.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing offers an extended detection window in Palmona Park, FL, capturing drug use over a span of up to 90 days. This feature provides employers with a thorough understanding of an individual's substance use history, contributing to better hiring decisions. Unlike limited-duration urine tests, hair analysis aligns with long-term drug-free workplace policies.

By leveraging the long detection window offered by hair testing, businesses gain comprehensive insights into potential employees' past behaviors. This capability aids in assessing an applicant's long-term commitment to a drug-free lifestyle, promoting safer, more productive workspaces. Such detailed historical perspective is unmatched by other testing methods.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle testing ensures highly reliable results in Palmona Park, FL. This method significantly minimizes the risk of sample adulteration, providing a trustworthy reflection of an individual's drug history. The observed collection process and biological characteristics of hair make it extremely difficult for individuals to alter the outcomes.

With hair tests designed to withstand attempts of deception, this method stands as a stronghold against tampering risks associated with other tests. This integrity is crucial for employers requiring unquestionable results to uphold strict drug policies and ensure regulatory compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
