Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug screenings in Parmalee, Florida. If you require a drug or alcohol test using hair samples, our specialty lies in hair testing, supported by locations in all cities nationwide ready to perform such tests. Generally, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Our hair tests cover analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a standard method in drug testing. These tests are increasingly mandated by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals instead of the usual urine tests. For employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and for individuals on probation, hair tests are the go-to option. The main advantage is the extended detection window for drug use, typically up to 90 days, collected under supervision and difficult to alter. However, urine tests remain best for identifying drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. A hair sample collected from the scalp can offer a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to falsify, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with about 200 hairs, akin to the size of a #2 pencil, near the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For tests like EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's wise to weigh the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When we reference head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other varieties (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The process of organizing a drug test result in a laboratory comprises four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to initially processing a sample within the lab's system. This step includes confirming the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid inspection for substances of abuse. Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in the majority of samples; however, for a positive screen to be legally admissible, confirmation is required. Samples that screen positive need an additional confirmation.

If a sample tests positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original specimen for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most complex methodologies.

Confirmation for any positive result from screening is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that tested positive in screening are cleansed before confirmation if needed. Every laboratory stage from Accessioning to Confirmation receives review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection range: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is arduous, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It illustrates a pattern of drug consumption over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Doesn't reveal recent usage: Drugs only become traceable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and personal differences in growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the actual examination is of the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
