Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Pebble Creek, Florida. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol evaluation, our expertise is in hair assessments, with centers in every city across the nation ready to conduct a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body hair can be utilized. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific testing needs.

Recently, there has been an increase in employing hair follicle drug exams for testing purposes. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists favor this method over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are preferred by employers with strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and probation officers. These tests provide a significant advantage with their longer detection period for drug use—up to 90 days—and involve an observed collection process, minimizing the chances of manipulation. Nevertheless, for drug use assessment within the past 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair offers a long-term overview of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. If taken close to the scalp, hair can present approximately a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we refer only to scalp hair. Body hair covers all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug test result processing involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and delivered properly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any outstanding data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a quick initial check for drug abuse signs. Although Screening is a cost-efficient way to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples with presumptively positive results during Screening need secondary confirmation.

In cases where a sample is presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is notably challenging to execute.

Confirmation for a positive screening result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo a wash prior to confirmation if needed. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days back, unlike urine tests that offer a more limited detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is considerably difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insight: It can indicate a pattern of drug use over a stretch of time, unlike detecting only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing with urine tests in Pebble Creek, FL, the former clearly stands out. Hair tests offer superior detection and reliability, ensuring that drug use is accurately identified over an extended period.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
