Accredited Drug Testing offers all-encompassing hair follicle drug examinations in Pine Island Ridge, Florida. If a hair drug or alcohol test is necessary, our expertise is in hair assessments, and we operate testing facilities in every city across the Nation capable of executing hair analyses. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other tailored testing options.

Recently, the trend towards drug testing increasingly incorporates hair follicle drug evaluations. Many employers, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer this method over the conventional urine analysis. Hair testing is adopted by employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation individuals. A significant advantage of hair testing lies in its extended detection window of up to 90 days, using an observed participation scheme that is almost foolproof. Yet, for screening recent usage within 5 days, the urine test remains the most precise choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying substance use. Hair can capture a long-term record of drugs and alcohol by preserving biomarkers within the hair strand fibers as they grow. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to a roughly 3-month detection timeframe for substances. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil's width) nearest the scalp equates to 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample quantity for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is preferred. We advise measuring the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample within the laboratory's framework. This step ensures that the sample is properly sealed and dispatched, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any needed data not provided by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment for drugs. While it's a cost-efficient approach to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result in Screening must be verified to be legally valid. Any samples that are initially positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be initially positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower levels than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is regarded as the most challenging technique to execute.

Positive results identified in Screening undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All initially positive samples are cleansed before Confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory chain from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests that have a shorter timeline.
  • Hard to falsify: It is exceedingly tough to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Tracks historical use: It reveals a pattern of substance usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become traceable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Variables like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can affect drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly dubbed as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
