Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Pine Lakes, Florida. If you require drug or alcohol testing using hair samples, Accredited Drug Testing is experienced in this methodology, with numerous testing centers across the nation, including every city. It is generally necessary to have 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair. Hair samples can be examined for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair test options.

The use of hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in recent years for conducting drug screenings. This method is being increasingly adopted by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts, who now prefer it over the traditional urine test. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers favor hair tests for their extended detection period for drug usage, lasting typically up to 90 days. Testing takes place under observation, making it extremely difficult to tamper with the results. For detecting drugs consumed within the previous 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

The perception of hair testing as an effective method for detecting substance use has increased significantly. By embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the developing hair, hair acts as a permanent record of drug and alcohol consumption. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 90-day detection span for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample consisting of 1.5 inches from around 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and those beyond 10 panels, it's suggested to have 150mg of the sample. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair not be accessible, a comparable amount of body hair may be obtained. By head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair forms (e.g., facial, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The four pivotal stages in the lab analysis of a drug testing outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This process involves validating proper sample sealing and shipment, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial swift assessment for substances of misuse. Although Screening serves as an economical means to eliminate drug usage for most samples, court-admissible results require a confirmed positive screen. Every sample found presumptively positive in Screening mandates subsequent confirmation.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration in this phase than via other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug screening as the most complex method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation, as necessary. The comprehensive lab process encompassing Accessioning through to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair analysis can spot drug usage spanning up to 90 days, contrasting with the brief detection period of urine tests.
  • High resistance to falsification: Hair drug examinations prove difficult to deceive, enhancing accuracy in results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can detail a drug usage pattern extending over time, not limited to just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: A 5-7 day period is required before drugs can be recognized in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair analysis tends to be pricier compared to alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair shade and individual hair growth differences might influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually examines the hair shaft, not the follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine testing in Pine Lakes, FL, the advantages are evident. Hair testing offers superior detection accuracy, identifying a range of substances with a precision that urine tests cannot match. Hair tests are less invasive and offer results that can unearth patterns of substance use up to 90 days prior, offering a broader insight into behavior.

Extended Detection Window

One of the most compelling advantages of hair follicle testing in Pine Lakes, FL is its extended detection window. With the ability to track drug consumption over the past 90 days, employers gain a more comprehensive understanding of an individual’s substance use history. Hair tests provide invaluable context for assessing long-term drug habits, surpassing other methods.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Pine Lakes, FL is incredibly tamper-resistant, delivering trustworthy results. Unlike other methods susceptible to alteration, hair samples are less likely to be compromised. This integrity ensures that the outcomes are reliable and legally defensible, minimizing the risk of manipulation and fraud.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
