Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Ponce de Leon, Florida. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing focuses on hair testing, with facilities in cities nationwide equipped to administer these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body may suffice. Hair evaluations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and include customized testing options.

Over the years, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly common in drug screening methods. Many employers, court systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probationary programs use hair tests. The key advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended drug detection window, typically up to 90 days, with an observed collection procedure making them difficult to tamper with. However, urine tests are still more accurate for detecting recent drug usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers in the fibers as the hair grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising about 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not an option, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we are specifically talking about scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure for processing a drug test result in a lab encompasses four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning concerns the initial processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This involves ensuring that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any remaining data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening carries out a preliminary fast check for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples appearing presumptively positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample appears presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are drawn from hair at a lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which accounts for the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Manipulating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are commonly pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual discrepancies in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
