Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Ponce Inlet, Florida. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol tests, our expertise in hair testing is matched with testing facilities in cities across the country. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from either the head or body is necessary. Hair tests can evaluate for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer various tailored testing solutions.

Hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly prevalent in recent years for drug screenings. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are leaning more towards hair tests as opposed to conventional urine tests. Hair follicle tests support zero-tolerance workplace policies and are preferred by courts and for people under probation. These tests highlight drug usage over a significant duration, typically up to 90 days, are supervised during collection, and offer a high-resistance to manipulation. Nonetheless, urine tests remain optimal for detecting recent drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a historical record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When obtained close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 strands of hair (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests involving more than 10 panels, a specimen quantity of 150mg is advised. It's suggested to determine the specimen's weight using a jeweler's scale. In cases where scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent volume of body hair can be collected. When discussing head hair, it refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in processing a drug test result in a lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage of incorporating a sample into a lab’s system. This process confirms that the sample was sealed and delivered correctly, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any other necessary data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial swift test to identify drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to negate drug usage on most samples, a positive result must be corroborated to be court-admissible. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a much finer concentration than other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation if required. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: It is very challenging to falsify a hair drug test, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal an individual's drug use pattern over time, not limited to recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: It generally takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
