Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Port LaBelle, Florida. For those seeking a hair drug or alcohol examination, our expertise lies in hair testing, with locations across all U.S. cities ready to administer these tests. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, often from the crown or body, for most analyses. Our hair tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances.

Lately, drug testing protocols increasingly favor the hair follicle drug test. More employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse professionals demand hair drug tests over traditional urine analyses. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, court systems, and probation officers utilize hair follicle tests. Their main advantage is a prolonged detection timeframe, often extending up to 90 days, conducted under observation, making cheating nearly impossible. Nonetheless, for detecting very recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs by encasing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection range of up to around three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to gather, slightly tough to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch section containing roughly 200 strands of hair (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg, an optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplemental analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, the equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process includes verifying proper sealing and shipment of the sample, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid check for drug abuse. While Screening serves as a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples identified as presumptively positive during Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thereby presenting hair drug screening as the most challenging methodology to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are employed to confirm any positive screening outcomes. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation, as needed. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Provides sequential data: It illustrates a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent use: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in results: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
