In Punta Rassa, Florida, Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug analysis. Whether it's hair drug or alcohol testing you require, our expertise is in hair assessments, and we boast facilities nationwide for hair analysis. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair suffices. These tests reveal drug, alcohol/ETG use, or offer custom hair screening choices.

Recently, drug screening often employs hair follicle tests. This method is favored by companies, courts, and Substance Abuse experts over standard urine tests. Hair tests are crucial for employers enforcing no-drug policies, courts, and probation individuals. The main advantage is its extended 90-day detection length, with observed sample collection enhancing its accuracy over urine tests for recent usage.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture biomarkers within their fibers, offering an extended timeline for detecting alcohol and drugs. When gathered near the scalp, hair can indicate usage over an approximately three-month span for alcohol and other substances. The collection process is straightforward, making hair samples hard to tamper with and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a number 2 pencil) from near the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is considered ideal for screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding ten panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is preferred. It is advisable to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is lacking, a comparable amount of body hair is acceptable. References to head hair specifically denote scalp hair. In contrast, body hair encompasses all other hair types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial incorporation of the sample into the laboratory system, ensuring the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data inputs as necessary, unless provided by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an expedited preliminary check for substance abuse. Although Screening offers an economical approach to dismiss drug usage for numerous samples, results indicating a positive require confirmation to be admissible in legal proceedings. Any samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate follow-up confirmation.

For those samples showing presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, the extraction of drugs from hair occurs at substantially lower concentrations than alternatives such as urine or oral fluid testing, which is why hair drug testing represents the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive findings from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All presumptively positive samples undergo a washing process prior to confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use over a period of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which offer a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Challenge to manipulate: Hair drug tests are notably challenging to compromise, yielding more reliable results.
  • Historical usage data: They can outline a drug usage pattern over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It typically takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than alternative drug testing strategies.
  • Result variation: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within hair.

Note: Even though sometimes called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
