In Redbay, Florida, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Our specialty lies in hair testing for both drugs and alcohol. With centers across all cities nationwide, we ensure accessibility for anyone requiring this service. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be assessed. These hair tests are versatile, analyzing for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

The use of hair follicle drug tests has surged in popularity, often preferred over urine tests by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts. This test supports zero-tolerance policies and probation requirements due to its extended detection capability, which can spot drug use up to 90 days and resists falsification. Nonetheless, for identifying use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The strands capture biomarkers within their fibers, offering a sustained indication of substance use. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period extending to nearly 3 months for drugs and alcohol. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (akin to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp is necessary to obtain 100mg, the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, extended panels, and tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen. If there is an absence of scalp hair, a proportionate quantity of body hair may be used. Reference to head hair specifically pertains to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test follows four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the introductory processing of a sample within a laboratory’s framework. This process includes ensuring that the sample was sealed and dispatched appropriately, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplemental data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening constitutes an initial assessment for prohibited substances. Screening is an economical option to discern drug usage for most samples. However, a positive screening necessitates validation for legal admissibility. Samples that test positive in Screening require further validation through secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be preliminarily positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations significantly lower than those found in other methodologies (for example, urine or oral fluids), which makes hair drug screening particularly complex.

Subsequent to a positive screening, Confirmation is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Prior to confirmation, samples presumed positive are cleansed as required. This entire laboratory sequence, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized in line with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings can identify drug usage for a duration reaching 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited timeframe.
  • Increased accuracy: The nature of hair drug tests makes them hard to compromise, resulting in more reliable findings.
  • Chronological usage data: They afford a behavioral pattern of drug consumption across time, beyond recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: It generally takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to manifest within hair strands.
  • Expense: Hair drug screenings typically cost more than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite often being labeled as "hair follicle tests", the evaluation actually assesses the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
