Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Resota Beach, Florida. Whether you require hair drug or alcohol evaluations, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, and we have facilities nationwide. For standard hair testing, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is typically necessary. We can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing services.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has been increasingly adopted. Many employers, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests rather than urine tests. Hair tests are favored by entities with strict drug policies, legal authorities, and probationary individuals. Key advantages are a longer detection window of up to 90 days and nearly immune to tampering, though urine tests remain best for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records a prolonged history of substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of its growing strands. When acquired near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to approximately three months for drugs and alcohol. Hair is easy to retrieve, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch segment containing roughly 200 strands of hair (comparable to a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg, which is the optimal sample amount for testing and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or those exceeding ten panels, a 150mg specimen is suggested. We advocate for weighing the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair might be utilized. When discussing head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result comprises four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab's framework. This process ensures that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data input absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a preliminary fast assessment for drug abuse. Though Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug presence in most samples, a positive finding must be verified to be valid in court. Samples that test presumptive positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample register presumptive positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a substantially lower concentration than through other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening a particularly intricate method.

Any positive screening outcomes undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleansed as necessary before confirmation. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and meets the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are difficult to manipulate, thus ensuring more reliable results.
  • Tracks historical usage: They exhibit a pattern of drug intake over time, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs need approximately 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests typically incur greater expenses than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the actual test assesses the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Superiority of Hair vs. Urine Testing in Resota Beach, FL

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
