Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services right here in Richmond West, Florida. For individuals seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, we excel in this area with testing facilities available across the nation that can conduct hair tests efficiently. Typically, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required for testing. Hair tests are versatile, with the capability to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized testing options.

Recently, the use of hair follicle drug tests has become increasingly prevalent. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are showing a preference for hair tests over traditional urine analysis. Hair follicle tests are ideal for organizations with stringent no-drug policies, the legal system, and those on probation. The main advantage of hair testing is its longer detection period for drug use, up to 90 days, collected through an observed process which is virtually impossible to tamper with. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have become recognized as a significant resource for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair maintains a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When clipped closely to the scalp, hair can present up to around a three-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional screenings, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair may be utilized. When we mention head hair, we only refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other kinds of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal procedures in the lab analysis of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab's workflow. This process verifies that the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any further data input absent in an electronic custody chain system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of misuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to eliminate drug usage from the bulk of samples, a positive screen must be verified for legal acceptability. Any samples that are preliminarily positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

Should a sample test preliminarily positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this process, drugs are isolated from hair at a markedly lower concentration compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug assessment is the most challenging method to execute.

Verification of any positive screening result is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples preliminarily positive undergo cleansing prior to confirmation, as required. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP Hair designation (College of American Pathologists) and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, rather than only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Approximately 5-7 days are needed for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than alternative methods of drug testing.
  • Result inconsistency: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
