Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Saint Lucie, Florida. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our focus on hair testing, alongside our nationwide network of testing centers, ensures reliable hair tests in any city. Typically, at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body hair can be used. Hair analysis is applicable for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or custom hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for drug testing. More employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts are choosing hair tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are crucial for zero-tolerance employment policies, legal proceedings, and managing probationers. A key advantage is the extended detection period of drug use, often up to 90 days, observed collection process, and difficulty in tampering, though for recent drug use, urine tests remain highly accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessment is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a comprehensive historical record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the hair fiber during its growth. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period for alcohol and drugs extending up to about three months. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising roughly 200 hair strands (around the width of a #2 pencil) next to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional screenings, and tests above ten panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. In mentioning head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial sample processing within a laboratory’s framework. This process involves verifying the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing necessary data entry not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of misuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug usage over most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal acceptability. Any samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When a sample indicates a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepped for Extraction. In this step, drugs are extracted from hair at considerably lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to conduct.

Any positive screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation if necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the complete laboratory process is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug screenings can identify drug usage up to 90 days, while urine tests have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficult to deceive: Cheating a hair drug screening is quite challenging, enhancing accuracy in results.
  • Provides usage pattern: Offers an overview of drug usage over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can alter drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests," the test itself analyses the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing triumphs over urine tests in Saint Lucie, FL, by offering superior accuracy and reliability. Unlike traditional urine tests, hair follicle analysis detects a wider range of substances, ensuring a comprehensive view of an individual's drug history. With a more extended detection window, hair tests capture evidence of substance use that urine tests might miss.

The meticulous nature of hair testing makes it ideal for situations demanding high accuracy. As a result, hair tests are increasingly preferred for their ability to provide detailed and reliable substance use insights. Employers and legal entities benefit from this accuracy, leading to informed and effective drug policy enforcement.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Saint Lucie, FL, benefit from the extended detection window of hair follicle testing. Capable of identifying drug use up to 90 days prior, hair tests provide a thorough overview of an individual's substance use history. This longer period gives employers the insights needed to assess applicants and employees accurately.

Unlike urine tests, with shorter detection periods, hair follicle testing's prolonged window is invaluable for employers seeking a comprehensive analysis. Employers can view a sustained history of substance use, guiding their hiring and employment decisions effectively. This transparency enhances workplace safety and integrity.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Saint Lucie, FL, is renowned for its tamper-resistant nature. The collection process minimizes the risk of adulteration, offering trusted and definitive results. Unlike other testing methods, hair tests are less susceptible to manipulation, maintaining the integrity of the testing process.

These tests drastically reduce the possibility of sample alteration or substitution. This resistance to tampering provides stakeholders with confidence in the results, reinforcing hair testing as a reliable measurement method. The credibility of hair tests is pivotal for maintaining fair and accurate drug testing standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
