In Saint Pete Beach, Florida, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. We specialize in hair drug and alcohol testing and operate centers nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required for testing. Our tests can screen for drugs and alcohol/ETG, or be customized to meet specific needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for drug screenings. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts are now opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair testing is preferred by organizations with strict drug policies, legal bodies, and probation services. The main advantage of this test is its extensive detection window of up to 90 days, along with an observed collection process that is tamper-proof. However, for detecting recent drug use, within the past 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When obtained near the scalp, hair can deliver a detection window of up to three months for both alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to ship.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for analysis and validation. For tests that include EtG, additional components, or extend beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not available, a corresponding amount of body hair may be used. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types of hair (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning constitutes the initial handling of a sample within a lab's framework. This phase includes ensuring that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary examination for drugs. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most cases, a positive result requires further confirmation to be valid in a legal context. Samples that test positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent verification.

Should a sample show a preliminary positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at substantially lower levels than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Positive Screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumed positive results undergo a washing step before confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 guidelines.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests can ascertain drug use over a span of 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter duration.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair test is considerably difficult, hence enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Supplies historical insight: It illustrates a pattern of substance use across time, not limited to recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of determining recent usage: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to emerge in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests typically cost more than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the levels of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strands instead of the follicles beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
