Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Sampson, Florida. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area, with facilities across all cities Nationwide equipped to conduct hair testing. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary for most tests, with the potential to analyze substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

The popularity of hair follicle drug tests has surged in recent years for conducting drug screenings. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are moving toward hair tests instead of traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probationers frequently use hair follicle tests. The significant advantage is the extended detection window, covering up to 90 days, along with tamper-proof collection under supervision, providing minimal risk of manipulation. For recent drug use within 5 days, however, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair shaft. When collected closely to the scalp, hair can reveal up to a three-month duration of alcohol and drug presence. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample approximately 1.5 inches long, consisting of around 200 hair strands (similar in diameter to a #2 pencil), closest to the scalp, constitutes 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the hair sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for a drug test result is composed of four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This entails ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening includes an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-effective approach to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed to be legally valid. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening must undergo secondary verification.

If a sample is found presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method to perform.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned prior to confirmation as required. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is exceedingly difficult to alter the results of a hair drug test, thereby enhancing the accuracy of the outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It can indicate a pattern of substance use over a duration, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are required for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", they analyze the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why favor hair follicle tests over the traditional urine tests in Sampson, FL? Firstly, hair testing boasts a substantially longer detection period compared to urine screens, which only cover recent use. This extended window allows employers and legal authorities to track patterns of drug use more accurately, enabling better-informed decisions regarding employee and law enforcement actions.

Additionally, hair tests are known for their reliability and accuracy over typical urine analyses. While urine tests can sometimes yield erroneous results due to hydration levels or intake of certain substances, hair testing provides a more stable and consistent indicator of drug use, solidifying its superiority as a preferred testing method across various domains.

Extended Detection Window

The primary appeal of hair follicle testing in Sampson, FL, lies in its extended detection window. With the ability to detect drug use for up to 90 days, this method gives employers and authorities a comprehensive insight into an individual’s substance use habits. By examining a broader timeline, it reveals patterns and trends over time that other testing methods may miss.

This extended time frame not only assists in pre-employment screenings but is also valuable for ongoing monitoring purposes. It establishes a clear and continuous profile of an individual’s drug usage, ensuring that decisions regarding employment or legal status are made with complete, contextual evidence.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Sampson, FL, hair follicle testing significantly diminishes the likelihood of sample adulteration, offering a tamper-resistant solution. Unlike other methods where individuals might meddle with the sample, hair tests remain virtually immune to such attempts, ensuring that results are truthful and trustworthy.

Hair testing's design makes it a preferred choice in contexts where accuracy is non-negotiable. By prioritizing integrity in sample collection and analysis, hair tests uphold the highest standards of reliability, making them an indispensable addition to drug screening protocols in diverse environments.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
