In Sanborn, Florida, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol screen, our specialty lies in hair testing, with facilities across all U.S. cities ready to assist. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is needed for an effective test. Hair samples can be assessed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing services.

The trend towards utilizing hair follicle drug testing has grown in recent times. Many organizations, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are favored by companies enforcing strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers. The key advantage of hair follicle testing is its extensive detection time for drug use, stretching up to 90 days, validated by observed collection. However, for assessing drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair archives a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. When hair is taken close to the scalp, it can offer up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Hair sampling is easy to collect, tough to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, comprising around 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest to the scalp, will yield 100mg, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, additional testing, and/or assays over 10 panels, 150mg is advised. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, similar amounts of body hair can be gathered. By head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The key phases in lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Within Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the lab’s system. Tasks entail checking that the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any extra data entry when not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening carries out a swift primary check for drug abuse. While Screening is economical in excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screening must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any samples tentatively positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If the Screening phase results in a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are drawn out of hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging technique to perform.

Positive screening outcomes require Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo a washing step before confirmation as necessary. The holistic lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is assessed under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, contrary to urine tests which possess a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenge to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, lending more accuracy to the results.
  • Historical record: It offers a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent ingestion: Drugs become detectable in hair after around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the testing analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
