Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Sea Ranch Lakes, FL. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol examination, we specialize in hair analysis, with testing facilities across the nation equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is necessary. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing needs.

Recently, the preference for drug testing has increasingly leaned towards hair follicle tests. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair analysis over conventional urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals often choose hair tests due to their extended detection period, which can reach up to 90 days. These are collected under direct supervision, making them nearly impossible to tamper with. However, urine tests remain the best option when detecting drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an influential method for detecting drug and alcohol use. By encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft, hair offers a comprehensive history of alcohol and other drugs. When obtained near the scalp, it can reveal up to a three-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section containing roughly 200 strands of hair (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair -- the optimal sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If head hair isn't accessible, a similar quantity of body hair may be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test outcome encompasses four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step where a sample is integrated into a lab's system. This procedure ensures the sample was securely sealed and correctly shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drugs of misuse. While Screening is an economical means of eliminating drug use in the majority of samples, a favorable screen must be validated for court acceptance. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening require subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. Drugs are then extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques validate any positive screening result. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. Each step from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to manipulate: The accuracy of hair drug tests is preserved by their resistance to tampering.
  • Delivers historical insight: They can delineate a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to indicate recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days following use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: The tests, often mistakenly called "hair follicle tests", evaluate the hair strand rather than the follicle itself beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

The debate in Sea Ranch Lakes, FL, highlights the clear advantages of hair follicle testing over traditional urine tests. Hair testing offers unparalleled accuracy and reliability, making it the premier choice for substance detection. Its ability to detect drug use over an extended period and its immunity to last-minute tampering make hair tests a superior option.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
