Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Shalimar, Florida. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with testing locations available in cities nationwide to conduct hair tests. Typically, samples of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are required. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for drug screening. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals now opt for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with a zero-tolerance policy, courts, and probation services favor hair follicle tests due to their extended detection window, which generally covers up to 90 days. These tests involve an observed collection process, making them extremely difficult to tamper with. For detection of recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the preferred option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The strands capture a prolonged history of substances by encasing markers within their fibers. When clipped near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol usage over nearly a three-month span. It’s effortlessly collected, less prone to tampering, and simple to transport.

A lock of 1.5 inches, roughly equating to the girth of a #2 pencil and about 200 strands, produces 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for initial and confirmatory checks. An amount of 150mg is advised for EtG, supplemental, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise weight measurement. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent portion of body hair is sufficient. By scalp hair, we mean the hair from the head only. Body hair encompasses all other kinds (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of drug test results involves four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s system. This process confirms that the sample is properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes further data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening refers to the preliminary swift evaluation for substances of abuse. Although cost-effective for excluding drug usage in most samples, positive screens must undergo confirmation to be legally acceptable. Presumptive positives from Screening must be confirmed with additional testing.

Should a sample indicate a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and processed for Extraction. Here, substances are isolated from hair at much lower levels than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing uniquely challenging.

Confirmation of positive screening outcomes is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, presumptive positive samples are cleansed as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both CAP's (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Capable of identifying substance use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter windows.
  • Hard to manipulate: Trickery is virtually impossible, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical tracking: Offers insights into patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent usage undetectable: Normally, it takes about 5-7 days for substances to show in hair.
  • Expense: Generally costs more than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and growth variations can influence metabolite concentration.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the strand itself, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
