Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Silver Lake, Florida. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our specialty in hair testing stands out, with facilities available nationwide for hair testing. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary. Hair tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for various options.

Recently, hair follicle testing is increasingly incorporated in drug testing. Employers, legal entities, and substance specialists prefer it over urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers rely on it. The main advantage is the extended detection period, up to 90 days, through observed sampling, making cheating nearly impossible. Yet, for detection within the past 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The growing hair strand captures biomarkers within its fibers, providing a prolonged record of these substances. When hair samples are collected near the scalp, they can offer a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other drug use. The collection process is straightforward, it is somewhat resistant to tampering, and shipping the samples is uncomplicated.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and validation. For EtG tests, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent portion of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing drug test results includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where a sample is processed into a laboratory's system, ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipment. This step involves assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) and completing any additional data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a preliminary inspection for drugs of abuse. Though it's a cost-effective method to eliminate drug usage for most samples, a positive result in Screening requires confirmation to be accepted in legal contexts. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

In instances of a presumptive positive during the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction phase. During Extraction, drugs are removed from the hair at much lesser concentrations than in other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a complex procedure to execute.

To confirm positive Screening outcomes, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS is used. Before confirmation, all presumptively positive samples are washed as needed. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning through to Confirmation, is subject to review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify substance use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have shorter detection spans.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Manipulating results in a hair drug test is quite challenging, ensuring greater accuracy.
  • Historic data provision: It provides a usage pattern over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Detecting recent use is impossible: It generally takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically costs more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Influences such as hair color and individual growth differences can alter drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is often used, but the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Choosing hair follicle testing over urine testing in Silver Lake, FL, brings clear benefits. Hair testing offers superior detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike traditional urine tests, which are limited by shorter detection windows and susceptibility to tampering, hair tests provide a comprehensive assessment without such vulnerabilities.

With extended detection windows, hair tests deliver trustworthy results that employers, legal systems, and healthcare professionals rely upon for accurate assessments.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Silver Lake, FL, offers an extensive detection period of up to 90 days. This long window allows employers to assess an individual's substance use history comprehensively. Compared to shorter-term tests, this method provides insights into patterns of behavior over several months.

Employers seeking to maintain high standards in their workforce benefit greatly from this extended view, ensuring informed hiring and ongoing employment decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Silver Lake, FL, significantly curtails the potential for sample tampering. Unlike other testing methods, the hair collection process is supervised, reducing the risk of adulteration. This oversight ensures that results remain reliable and trustworthy.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
