In Silver Springs Shores, Florida, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Specializing in hair tests, our nationwide centers execute these tests efficiently. You need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your crown or body for testing. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

Increasingly, drug testing methods feature hair follicle tests rather than standard urine tests. These tests are mandated by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and professionals handling substance abuse. Hair follicle tests are advantageous due to their extended 90-day detection window, secured through an observed collection process, making cheating nearly impossible. Nonetheless, urine tests remain most accurate for usage detection in the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a notable method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a long-term archive for alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's fibrous structure as it grows. When taken close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to three months for both alcohol and drugs. It's straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

An ideal screening and confirmation sample consists of a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) near the scalp, yielding about 100mg of hair. In scenarios involving EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of hair is preferred. It's advisable to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair imply scalp hair only, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

There are four key stages in the lab analysis of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the sample's initial integration into the lab’s systems. This process includes confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, allotting a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic custody chain.

Screening is a preliminary and rapid evaluation for potential drug misuse. Though cost-effective and suitable for a majority of samples, a positive screening result necessitates confirmation for court validity. Samples yielding a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drug compounds are isolated from hair at notably lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), posing a challenge for hair drug screening procedures.

Confirmation of positive screening results is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Any presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The entire lab procedure, from Accessioning through Confirmation, observes both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and adheres to the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a noticeably shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: The challenge of tampering with hair drug tests results in higher accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: These tests can indicate a pattern of drug use over an extended timeframe, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth patterns can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly called "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
