Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in South Daytona, Florida. For individuals needing drug or alcohol analysis, we specialize in hair testing, with facilities in cities across the nation prepared to administer these tests. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the crown or body is often necessary. Hair exams assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer custom options.

Hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly common in recent years as a means of screening. Numerous employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair testing over traditional urine tests. This type of test is especially favored by employers with strict anti-drug policies, judicial authorities, and probationary programs. One advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, through an observed collection, making it difficult to fake. For recent substance use within 5 days, urine tests remain the top choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of substance use, preserving biomarkers within the fibers as the hair strand grows. When collected from near the scalp, hair offers up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and shipment is convenient.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) proximal to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests beyond 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is advised. It's suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be collected. References to head hair specifically pertain to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Synopsis

The key stages involved in the laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the primary integration of a sample into a lab's system, including verification of proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for drug presence. While cost-efficient for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screening result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening demand further confirmation.

For samples with a presumptive positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, substances are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug testing the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Each presumptive positive sample is washed before confirmation, if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Perks of hair drug analysis:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenge to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historic data supply: It outlines a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Lack of recent use detection: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are generally pricier than other testing methods.
  • Outcome variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
