Accredited Drug Testing specializes in comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in South Miami Heights, Florida. Whether you need a hair drug or alcohol test, our facility provides expert hair testing with centers available in cities across the Nation. Typically, using 1.5 to 2 inches of your hair from the head or body is sufficient. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

The hair follicle drug test has gained popularity in recent years as a preferred method of detection. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals favor it over urine tests. Hair tests serve businesses with strict no-drug policies, courts, and those on probation. The significant advantage is its extended detection period, up to 90 days, collected in an observed setting, and difficult to manipulate. Still, urine tests remain the most accurate for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as an efficient means for detecting alcohol and drug use. Hair can capture biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows, offering a comprehensive history of substance intake. With samples taken from the scalp, it can reveal substance use for roughly up to a 3-month period. Hair collection is hassle-free, somewhat resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch specimen comprising approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, additional tests, or over 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. In instances where scalp hair is absent, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. By head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair only. Body hair pertains to all other forms of hair (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

Key stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial procedure of integrating a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step verifies the correct sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective approach to eliminating drug use in most samples, only confirmed positive screens are permissible in legal situations. Samples that indicate a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positive results during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are separated from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), thereby rendering hair drug screening a more challenging technique to carry out.

The confirmation of any presumptive positive screening result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation, if necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory process is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug consumption for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests present a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug tests are notoriously hard to cheat, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: They demonstrate a pattern of drug use over time, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Detecting drugs in hair typically takes around 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests generally entail higher expenses than alternative drug testing strategies.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and differences in individual hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Often mislabeled as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Choosing hair follicle testing over traditional urine methods offers significant advantages in South Miami Heights, FL. Hair tests deliver superior detection accuracy, offering a reliable measure of drug use that urine tests might miss. This is crucial for employers seeking certainty in their hiring processes.

While urine tests have their place, hair testing's extended detection period provides a broader view of substance use, enabling employers to enforce zero-tolerance policies effectively. This is especially beneficial in settings where safety is a priority.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing is favored for its extended detection window, up to 90 days, making it a powerful tool for employers in South Miami Heights, FL. This longevity offers a comprehensive view of an individual's substance use history, beyond the scope of urine tests.

The ability to track drug use over such an extended period allows employers to make informed decisions, ensuring only individuals with clean records are trusted with responsibilities in the workplace.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
