Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug assessments in South Palm Beach, Florida. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, our speciality is in hair analysis, and we have sites across every city nationwide that offer this test. Typically, about 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair examinations can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for specific testing requirements.

Lately, the approach to drug screening increasingly involves hair follicle analysis. Several employers, legal bodies, and addiction specialists opt for a hair screening over the regular urine analysis. Hair follicle tests are employed by employers enforcing stringent anti-drug policies, judiciary systems, and those on probation. A key advantage is the extended drug detection timeframe of up to 90 days, collected under direct observation, minimizing tampering chances. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug consumption within 5 days, urine tests remain precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective means for detecting the use of drugs and alcohol. It allows the tracking of long-term consumption of these substances by embedding biomarkers in the fiber of the progressively growing hair strand. When collected from the area nearest to the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use for a period extending up to about three months. The collection process is straightforward, the likelihood of tampering is low, and it is easy to transport.

To obtain a standard sample, a 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp is needed, amounting to 100mg of hair which is ideal for assessment and verification. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is preferred. It is advisable to measure the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. The term head hair refers to scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially entered into a laboratory's system. This process includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry if not provided via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for abusive substances. It offers a cost-efficient method for excluding drug use in most samples, however, a positive result in Screening must be validated to be considered legally admissible. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive result at the Screening phase, additional hair is drawn from the original sample and set up for Extraction. At this stage, the drugs are extracted from hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Positive screening results require Confirmation through techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed as needed prior to confirmation. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation following the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the accreditation based on ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a limited detection period.
  • Resistant to manipulation: Altering a hair drug test is notably difficult, rendering results more trustworthy.
  • Shows usage history: It reveals patterns of substance use over time, rather than focusing solely on recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Limited in detecting recent use: Drugs usually take around 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Typically, hair drug tests are more costly compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Differences such as hair color and personal growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests," this test examines the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In South Palm Beach, FL, the superiority of hair follicle testing is evident when compared to traditional urine analysis. Hair testing offers a wider detection range, effectively tracing drug usage over extended periods. While urine tests primarily focus on recent consumption, hair tests provide an in-depth analysis, elevating detection accuracy and delivering dependable results.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in South Palm Beach, FL benefit from the extended detection window offered by hair follicle testing. This method captures drug usage over a prolonged span, often up to 90 days. Such comprehensive insight offers employers a better picture of an employee's substance history, aiding in informed decision-making regarding recruitment and retention policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
