Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Southeast Leon, Florida. For those who require a hair-related drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing spans nationwide, with centers in every city capable of executing hair tests. You generally need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or elsewhere on the body for testing. These hair assessments can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a preferred method for drug testing. Organizations, legal systems, and Substance Abuse specialists often opt for hair tests over traditional urine samples. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probation-required individuals favor hair tests due to their prolonged detection window, which can extend up to 90 days, coupled with an observed collection process that is highly tamper-resistant. However, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable method.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is viewed as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair samples can offer up to a three-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, moderately challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising approximately 200 hairs (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the ideal quantity for screening and subsequent confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair cannot be used, an equivalent quantity of body hair is an alternative. When referencing head hair, this pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps involved in processing a laboratory drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample within a laboratory's framework. It encompasses confirming correct sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening performs an initial rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. While a cost-effective strategy to negate drug use across most samples, a positive result from Screening necessitates confirmation to be legally defensible. Any samples that are initially positive in Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

If a Screening phase result is presumptively positive, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for preparation in the Extraction stage. Here, substances are extracted from the hair at considerably lower concentrations than alternative approaches (such as urine or oral fluid), which contributes to the complexity of hair drug screening procedures.

Confirmation of a presumptively positive result occurs via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with tentative positive findings are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests detect drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating on a hair drug test is incredibly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: Offers an overview of drug usage patterns over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Detection of drugs in hair takes approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Southeast Leon, FL, hair follicle testing stands out against traditional urine tests. Its superior detection accuracy makes it ideal for environments demanding unwavering reliability. Unlike urine tests, which may miss sporadic users, hair tests offer clear insights into regular and infrequent substance use, providing a more comprehensive safety net.

Hair testing serves as a robust method against attempted evasion. While urine tests can be circumvented, carefully monitored collection ensures genuine samples and minimizes deceit, establishing an environment of transparency and trust vital for organizational well-being and policy enforcement.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing offers a remarkable 90-day detection window in Southeast Leon, FL, far exceeding urine test capabilities. This elongated period offers employers an expanded view into the potential drug habits of applicants or employees, enabling more informed hiring decisions that contribute to a safer, more secure workplace.

Through its extensive detection range, hair tests provide unmatched oversight into substance history. This advantage is pivotal for employers aiming for thorough evaluations and selection of personnel who align with their drug-free workplace standards while ensuring long-term productivity.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing minimizes the risk of tampering, providing Southeast Leon, FL, employers with trustworthy results. Unlike other methods where sample adulteration may occur, the nature of hair testing significantly reduces these possibilities, yielding reliable outcomes that are beyond reproach, crucial for maintaining organizational integrity.

The collection of a hair sample is a process resistant to manipulative tactics. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
