In Southwest Leon, Florida, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Specializing in hair and alcohol testing, our centers across the nation offer reliable services. If you have between 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head, or enough body hair, we can conduct the test. Hair testing is available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or with other tailored options.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have become the preferred method for drug screening. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts favor them over traditional urine tests. For employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers, hair tests offer a longer detection window, typically up to 90 days, with an observed and cheat-proof collection process. Still, for detecting recent drug use in the last 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair provides an extended record of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use over a detection window of up to roughly three months. It is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A specimen of 1.5 inches from approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, enhancements, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure for laboratory processing of results from a drug test includes four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary handling of a sample within the laboratory framework. This process verifies the sample's sealing and shipment, assigns it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening executes an initial, rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although cost-effective for excluding drug usage in most samples, positive findings in Screening must undergo confirmation to be valid in legal contexts. Positive results in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When Screening suggests a positive result, additional hair from the original sample is utilized and made ready for Extraction. This stage removes drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug analysis is particularly intricate.

Confirmation for any positive initial findings is achieved through techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples showing presumptive positives are cleansed as needed before confirmation. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug analysis can track drug use up to 90 days, while urine tests offer a more limited detection period.
  • High resistance to manipulation: Attempting to alter hair drug test results is highly challenging, enhancing accuracy.
  • Delivers historical usage data: It provides insights into a behavioral pattern of drug use over time, rather than immediate use alone.

Limitations:

  • Incapability to identify recent intake: Detectability of drugs in hair takes approximately 5-7 days to establish.
  • Expensive: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs compared to alternate testing methods.
  • Inconsistent results: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact drug metabolite concentrations within the hair.

Note: While commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
