Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing solutions in Southwest Orange, Florida. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with testing centers available across all major cities Nationwide. For accurate testing, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body can be used. Hair tests analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailor-specific testing options.

In recent times, drug testing methods increasingly incorporate hair follicle drug tests. Employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse specialists now opt for hair tests over standard urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals utilize hair tests. The main advantage is a longer drug detection window—up to 90 days, collected under observation and hard to manipulate. For recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the best choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become regarded as a vital instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of a developing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to roughly a 3-month detection period for substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of about 200 hairs (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the perfect quantity for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additions, and/or examinations beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If head hair is not available, a similar mass of body hair may be obtained. When mentioning head hair, we are specifically talking about scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary procedures entailed in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a specimen into a laboratory’s framework. This involves confirming that the specimen was secured and transported correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input not provided by a digital chain of custody process.

Screening comprises an initial brief examination for abusive substances. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use on most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be valid in court. Any specimens that are tentatively positive in Screening do necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is tentatively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and set for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening presents the most challenges to perform.

Confirmation of any positive outcome from Screening is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentative positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug evaluation, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Yields historical information: It can reveal a pattern of substance use over a duration, beyond just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It generally takes 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations are typically costlier than other test forms.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can alter the concentration of drug metabolites within hair.

Note: Although often mentioned as "hair follicle tests", the examination itself analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Southwest Orange, FL, hair follicle testing offers superior detection accuracy compared to traditional urine testing. Hair testing can analyze a drug history of up to 90 days, allowing a more comprehensive view of a person's substance use. Urine tests, while popular, have a limited detection window. Extended Detection Window

One of the biggest advantages of hair follicle testing available in Southwest Orange, FL is its extended detection window. Hair tests can reveal drug use over a much longer duration, up to 90 days, compared to other testing methods. This gives employers and professionals a thorough understanding of an individual's substance history, offering valuable insights not available with shorter-term tests like urine samples.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests are recognized for their unrivaled ability to minimize sample tampering compared to other methods. In Southwest Orange, FL, the observed collection process ensures the integrity of the sample, virtually eliminating the possibility of adulteration. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
