Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle tests in Springfield, Florida. Whether you require testing for drugs or alcohol, our company excels in hair analysis, with facilities across all U.S. cities prepared to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from either the scalp or body is needed. Hair evaluations can be tailored for detection of substances, including drugs, ETG/alcohol, and more specific analyses.

Recently, hair follicle testing has gained traction as a favored method for drug evaluation. It's increasingly mandated by employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse counselors in lieu of traditional urine tests. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, judicial bodies, and probation services employ hair testing due to its extended detection timeframe, which covers up to 90 days, with sample collection being observable to minimize manipulation risks. Nonetheless, for screening within a recent 5-day window, urine testing remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is highly regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair offers a prolonged historical view of alcohol and other substances by encasing biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a three-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and various substances. Hair collection is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch strand sample of roughly 200 hairs (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advise weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, a comparable quantity of body hair may be gathered. In discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair solely. Body hair denotes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in the laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial stage of integrating a sample into a laboratory’s system. This comprises checking that the sample was properly sealed and shipped, designating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any extra data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. While Screening is an efficient means to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal acceptance. Any samples that presumptively indicate positivity in Screening necessitate an additional confirmation.

If Screening suggests a presumptive positive, more hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Confirming any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples indicating presumptive positivity are cleaned before confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is nearly impossible, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Historical data provision: It offers a drug use pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth discrepancies can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Superior Detection Accuracy characterizes hair follicle tests over conventional urine tests in Springfield, FL. Hair testing spans up to a 90-day detection window, covering a broader substance use history than urine tests, capturing attempts of sporadic and regular usage alike.
The reliability of hair testing is unmatched as providers deliver consistent results, free from the common pitfalls observed in urine analyses such as diluted or adulterated samples.

Compared to urine samples, hair testing's observability further ensures the elimination of tampering risks. Clients benefit from straightforward procedures, granting organizations confidence in employing results-oriented approaches to maintaining workplace standards. This testing method thus fosters a drug-free environment, valuable for establishments implementing stringent anti-drug protocols.

Extended Detection Window

In Springfield, FL, hair follicle testing offers an extended detection window for substance use, significantly longer than urine tests. This method traces drug use up to 90 days, allowing employers to examine an individual's history beyond recent usage. Through this approach, organizations gain insightful data into long-term habits, essential for maintaining a drug-free workplace.

Comprehensive insights into substance use habits emerge from evaluating samples over time. Employers can observe trends of consumption, providing a clearer picture for candidate assessments or ongoing staff monitoring. From pre-employment screenings to compliance checks, long detection periods offer unparalleled advantages in verifying lasting sobriety.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
