In Suncoast Estates, Florida, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise extends nationwide with testing facilities in all cities capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair testing can reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing is increasingly utilized in conducting drug tests. Various employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug use policies, legal authorities, and probation departments favor these tests. They offer an extended detection duration of up to 90 days, are monitored during collection and are nearly uncheatable. Yet, for detecting very recent drug use, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly regarded as a significant method for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures evidence of substances over time by embedding indicators within the fibers of its growing strands. If cut near the scalp, hair can provide a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for various substances. It is straightforward to collect, moderately resistant to tampering, and easy to send for analysis.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of around 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation stages. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. It's suggested to utilize a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equal quantity of body hair is an acceptable alternative. When discussing head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair refers to any other hair types (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a drug test in a laboratory involve Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial step of integrating a sample into a lab’s system, ensuring the sample was securely sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing data entry tasks not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial assessment for drug presence. While Screening is cost-efficient for dismissing drug use across most samples, results that turn out positive must be confirmed for legal validity. Any samples that are potentially positive during Screening require a secondary confirmation.

For samples that show a potential positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. In this phase, trace amounts of drugs are extracted from hair with much lower concentrations compared to other testing methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is completed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Any sample that is potentially positive is subjected to washing before confirming as necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning through to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) guidelines for Hair and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection duration: Hair drug tests identify drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistant to manipulation: Falsifying results in a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Reveals usage patterns: It can indicate drug usage trends over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent drug use: It generally takes about 5-7 days before drugs become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences may impact the level of drug residues in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair shaft and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
