Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services throughout Sweetwater, Florida. Whether you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, and we offer facilities across the nation to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for other purposes.

In recent years, the popularity of hair follicle drug testing has grown significantly. Many employers, court systems, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation programs. Their primary advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected under direct supervision, making them hard to circumvent. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the best choice for detection within a five-day period.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair retains a long-term record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within its fibers. Collected near the scalp, hair captures a detection range of up to about 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair sample collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch strand sample consisting of around 200 hairs (approximating a #2 pencil's size) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirming. For EtG assessments, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is preferred. We advise measuring the weight of the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair can't be collected, a similar quantity of body hair may be used. "Head hair" refers solely to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for drug test result processing comprises four pivotal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample's integration into the laboratory system is managed. This phase involves ensuring the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, assigning a distinct LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid check for abuse drugs. While being a cost-efficient screening approach for ruling out drug use in most samples, a court-admissible outcome necessitates confirming positive screens. Samples indicating presumptive positivity in Screening require further Confirmation.

For samples marked presumptively positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is collected from the original specimen for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from the hair at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening result gets carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before Confirmation, as needed. The process — from Accessioning to Confirmation — is validated according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use over up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter windows.
  • Cheating is hard: A high level of difficulty in tampering ensures accurate results in hair drug tests.
  • Historical usage data: It reveals drug use patterns over time, not only recent instances.

Limitations:

  • Inability to indicate recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair in about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," this test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Sweetwater, FL, hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing due to its superior detection capabilities. Hair tests offer more reliable and accurate results, making it a favored choice among employers and legal entities. Compared to traditional urine tests, hair testing provides a broader detection window, effectively identifying drug use over an extended period, and reducing the likelihood of missed substance use.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
