Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services right in The Hammocks, Florida. If a hair or alcohol test is required, our expertise in hair testing and extensive network of testing centers nationwide ensures a smooth process. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed for these tests. Hair assessments can reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored tests as required.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have gained prominence in drug testing protocols. These tests are increasingly requested by employers, the judiciary, and Substance Abuse professionals, offering an alternative to standard urine tests. Benefiting employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probation officers, hair follicle tests are unrivaled in their 90-day detection window, observed collection process, and resistance to tampering. However, for recent drug use over five days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug exposure by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When hair is sampled near the scalp, it can provide a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 hair strands (around the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields approximately 100mg, which is the optimal weight for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, it is advisable to obtain 150mg of the specimen. A jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be utilized. The term "head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

Processing a drug test result in the lab involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning incorporates the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s workflow. This step includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigning it a randomized LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. While it is a cost-efficient method for dismissing drug use in most specimens, any positive result during Screening must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Presumptive positives from Screening necessitate a secondary validation.

In cases where a sample tests presumptively positive in Screening, more hair is retrieved from the initial batch and prepared for Extraction. At this juncture, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing poses a greater challenge in execution.

Confirming positive screening outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning through to Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use reaching up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which detect use over a shorter span.
  • Hard to tamper with: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, thus the results are more dependable.
  • Historical insights: It captures a timeline of drug usage over an extended period, rather than only recent exposure.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth patterns can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
