Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Tierra Verde, Florida. Need a hair alcohol or drug test? Our centers, located in cities nationwide, specialize in hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair are required. Our tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer custom options.

Recently, drug testing often involves hair follicle tests. These are now preferred by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts over traditional urine tests. They are favored by those with zero-tolerance policies, court mandates, and probation requirements because they offer a longer detection window up to 90 days and are minimally prone to tampering. However, urine tests remain precise for recent 5-day usage.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly acknowledged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It captures a timeline of substance intake by encasing biochemical markers within the strands of hair, which, when sampled from near the scalp, offers a detection period of up to around three months for both alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easily transportable.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches in length comprising roughly 200 pieces of hair (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for both screening and verification procedures. For EtG, additional tests, and/or testing exceeding 10 panels, a sample weight of 150mg is advised. It is recommended to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair not be accessible, an equivalent mass of body hair is acceptable. When discussing head hair, it refers specifically to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes any other hair classifications (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

Four principal phases are involved in processing a drug test result at the lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial procedure where the sample is recorded into the lab’s system. This phase verifies whether the sample is properly sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any further data entry absent in the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary examination for drugs, aiding in efficiently eliminating cases of non-use for most samples, yet any positive findings from this phase need confirmation for legal acceptability. Samples suspected of being positive in Screening must undergo confirmatory testing.

When a sample returns a presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction stage, where drugs are isolated from the hair in much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which renders hair drug testing the most intricate methodology.

Any positive findings undergo GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS confirmation testing. All initially positive samples are subject to washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the regulations of the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accreditation in compliance with ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug testing reveals drug use over a period of up to 90 days, contrasting with the shorter range of urine tests.
  • Hard to falsify: Hair drug tests offer robust accuracy and are challenging to manipulate.
  • Historic usage data: This method provides insights into long-term consumption patterns as opposed to recent use alone.

Limitations:

  • Recent use limitation: Detection begins only after drugs have been present in hair for approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be more costly compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Differences in hair color and growth rate among individuals may influence drug metabolite levels within the hair.

Note: Despite being labeled as "hair follicle tests", this method evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Tierra Verde, FL, hair follicle testing offers numerous advantages over urine tests. The primary benefit is its superior detection accuracy, revealing drug use over an extended period of up to 90 days. This offers a more reliable assessment compared to traditional methods. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
