In Verona Walk, Florida, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. Whether for alcohol or drug screening, our centers nationwide, including local facilities, are well-equipped for hair tests. To conduct these tests, you should have hair measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, generally taken from the crown. We cater to drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer tailored hair testing solutions.

The use of hair follicle drug tests has soared in recent years, replacing traditional urine tests as the preferred method. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals favor these tests due to their longer detection window of up to 90 days. Administered under direct observation, they are nearly impossible to tamper with, offering unmatched accuracy. Yet, for substances used within a five-day period, urinalysis remains more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for detecting substance use. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair's fibers. When extracted near the scalp, hair offers roughly a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drug use. Hair collection is straightforward, harder to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising about 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. If scalp hair is missing, a similar amount of body hair can be used. Head hair refers specifically to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (like facial or armpit hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four crucial steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of processing a sample into a lab system. It includes ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid check for substance use. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to rule out usage in most samples, a positive outcome must be confirmed for court admissibility. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample turn up presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is drawn from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under both the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can detect substance use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to deceive: Hair drug tests are highly resistant to tampering, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Historical data: This method provides a timeline of drug use over time, rather than just detecting recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
