In Viking, Florida, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. Specialized in hair testing, they provide services across various cities nationwide, ensuring accessibility for those seeking drug or alcohol evaluations. A sample typically requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body. These tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing needs.

Hair follicle testing has gained momentum as a preferred drug screening method, overshadowing urine tests among employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationary programs favor hair tests due to their expanded detection period of up to 90 days, observational collection, and difficulty in tampering. Still, urine tests remain effective for recent drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair evaluations have emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and substances due to the entrapment of biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reflect drug and alcohol usage over an approximately 90-day period. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximating the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is considered the optimal sample for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and screenings exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the hair sample is advisable. We advocate the use of a jeweler’s scale for measuring the sample. If scalp hair isn’t accessible, a comparable amount of body hair can be gathered. When discussing head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal stages in the laboratory analysis of a drug test sample encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. It includes verifying that the sample was properly sealed and transported, the assignment of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and the completion of data entry not covered by an electronic tracking system.

Screening provides a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method for dismissing drug use in most samples, a positive finding must be confirmed to be accepted in legal settings. Any samples flagged as potentially positive during Screening necessitate an additional confirmation step.

Should a sample indicate a potential positive result at the Screening stage, further hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than found in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), accounting for why hair drug analysis is among the more challenging methodologies.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that indicate a presumptive positive result undergo washing prior to confirmation when necessary. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation in addition to accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair drug evaluations can identify substance use over many months, unlike urine tests which have a brief detection time frame.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug evaluation is exceedingly difficult, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals historical usage: It outlines a user's substance habits over time, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent activity: Detectability of substances in hair generally requires 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations are typically pricier compared to alternatives.
  • Differentials in results: Hair properties such as color and individual growth variations can influence metabolite concentrations.

Note: Though frequently termed "hair follicle evaluations," the test actually analyzes the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
