Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Wakulla, Florida. Specialized in hair analysis for drugs and alcohol, our numerous centers span across all cities Nationwide, facilitating easy access to hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Hair samples can be examined for drugs, ETG/alcohol, or tailored testing solutions.

In recent years, hair follicle drug analysis has seen an uptick in usage for screening. Many employers, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse counselors opt for hair tests over traditional urine screenings. Companies with stringent drug policies, courts, and those under probation mandates are primary users. A major edge of hair analysis is its prolonged detection window—up to 90 days—and the observation during collection, minimizing fraud. Yet, for drug use detection within a recent 5-day window, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term archive of alcohol and other substances by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the expanding hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly 90 days for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising around 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we are specifying scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial handling of a sample into the laboratory's system. This process ensures that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra data entry not incorporated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective approach to eliminate drug use on most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be permissible in court. Any samples that are initially positive in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

In cases where a sample is initially positive during the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at a much lower concentration than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which contributes to why hair drug screening is the most complex approach to implement.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All initially positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is significantly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Supplies historical data: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Differing results: Factors such as hair color and individual discrepancies in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the test itself examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
