Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Wallace, Florida. When you're in need of hair-based drug or alcohol testing, our company excels in hair analyses, with facilities in various cities across the nation that conduct these tests. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on your crown or body is required. Hair samples can be screened for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a popular method for detecting substance use. Courts, employers, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair drug screenings over the traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation services. Hair follicle tests are advantageous due to their extended detection window of up to 90 days, observed sample collection, and their resistance to tampering. However, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments are now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a timeline for alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When acquired near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a roughly 3-month timeframe for alcohol and drug detection. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for analysis and validation. For EtG, supplementary tests, or panels exceeding 10, a specimen size of 150mg is suggested. It is advised to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is lacking, a comparable amount of body hair can be obtained. The reference to head hair specifically means scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test outcome encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial procedure of entering a sample into the lab’s system. This involves confirming the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug use for most samples, a positive result necessitates validation to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require further verification.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at substantially lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples testing positively are washed before confirmation as required. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is meticulously reviewed according to the standards set by both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides usage history: It offers a pattern of substance use across a duration, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to traditional urine testing in Wallace, FL, the superiority is evident. Hair tests offer extended detection windows and are harder to deceive, providing more accurate and reliable outcomes. This gives them the edge over the conventional urine tests, particularly for employers seeking accurate substance use histories.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
