Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Wellington, Florida. If you necessitate a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair examinations, and we have facilities Nationwide in every city to execute a hair test. Ideally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body is required. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair test options.

In recent times, drug testing procedures have increasingly involved hair follicle analyses. Numerous employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over conventional urine methods. Hair follicle tests are utilized by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and individuals under probation. The primary advantage of hair tests is their extended detection period for drug use, typically up to 90 days, collected under observation, making them nearly cheat-proof. Nonetheless, the urine test remains more precise for identifying drug usage within the preceding 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture biomarkers within their fibers, offering a long-term record of substance use. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use over an approximately three-month period. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil’s width) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, optimal for testing and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is preferable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. If scalp hair is insufficient, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for drug testing encompasses four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory system. This process verifies that the specimen was properly sealed and shipped, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment for commonly abused substances. While cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screening result necessitates confirmation to be admissible in a legal context. Any presumptive positives in Screening must undergo a secondary validation.

Should a sample test presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a concentration much lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is among the most challenging methodologies.

Confirming any positive result from screening employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation as required. The complete process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is subjected to review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter span.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Tracks usage patterns: It offers a timeline of drug use over time, not limited to recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often dubbed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Wellington, FL, hair follicle testing reigns supreme over traditional urine tests for various reasons. Hair tests provide superior detection accuracy with a longer window for tracing drug usage, typically up to 90 days. While urine tests are limited to detecting recent drug use, hair tests offer a more comprehensive overview, reflecting drug consumption over time.

Hair testing is largely unrivaled in reliability compared to urine tests, which can be tampered with more easily. Its robust accuracy ensures employers and legal bodies receive dependable results, establishing a more trustworthy testing scenario.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Wellington, FL, find hair follicle testing invaluable due to its extended detection window. Capable of tracing drug use over a period of up to 90 days, this method provides a thorough understanding of an individual's substance usage history. This extended overview equips employers with insights necessary for informed and fair decision-making in hiring and employee evaluations.

Unlike urine tests, which can only detect recent drug use, hair testing's ability to chronicle long-term patterns of substance use provides a compelling picture of a person's habits. This extensive window makes hair follicle testing a preferred choice for maintaining workplace safety.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
