Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in West Lealman, Florida. Whether requiring a hair drug or alcohol assessment, we excel in hair testing with facilities available across the nation, ready to conduct hair tests. Normally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Analyzing hair tests can yield results for substances such as drugs and alcohol/ETG, among other tailored testing services.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug detection. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are preferring this method over conventional urine tests. Those with strict no-drug policies, legal authorities, and probation officers are relying on hair follicle tests. A key advantage is the extended detection window, revealing drug use up to 90 days past, making it difficult to alter or fake. However, urine tests still lead in accuracy for detecting recent drug use within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair offers a comprehensive history of substance use by capturing biomarkers in the strands of growing hair. When taken from near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection period for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hairs (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the target sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG extensions and/or panels over 10, 150mg of specimen is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing. When scalp hair isn't accessible, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. “Head hair” refers specifically to scalp hair, while “body hair” includes all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result entails four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning focuses on the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab's system. It includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment for drug abuse. While it serves as a cost-effective method to rule out drug use in most cases, a positive screen must be verified for legal admissibility. Samples that are initially positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If Screening indicates a sample is positive, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations than other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing a more complex methodology.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are used to confirm any positive screening result. All samples identified as positive are cleaned before confirmation, if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast with shorter detection windows of urine tests.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, resulting in more reliable results.
  • Provides historical data: It delivers a timeline of drug usage over a duration, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests generally have higher costs compared to other testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Factors such as hair color and individual growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though sometimes termed "hair follicle tests", the test actually evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
