In West Samoset, Florida, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services. Our centers nationwide can facilitate hair drug and alcohol tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are required from the crown or body. Hair tests are versatile and can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can be customized for specific needs.

The preference for hair follicle drug tests has increased among employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals. This method is favored over urine tests due to a longer drug detection history of up to 90 days, strict collection protocols, and improved accuracy. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable indicator.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is widely regarded as an effective means for discovering drug and alcohol consumption. It captures a detailed record of these substances by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair's fibers. Hair samples obtained near the scalp can provide a detection timeframe of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, tampering with hair is challenging, and it's easy to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 strands (similar in circumference to a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp can yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirming results. For EtG, additional analysis, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it's advisable to collect 150mg of the sample. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh it. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be utilized. By head hair, we mean only the scalp hair. All other body hair types refer to body hair (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal stages in the lab processing of a drug test include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the primary integration of a sample into the laboratory system. This step verifies the sample sealing and transportation integrity, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data logging absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial expeditious assessment for the presence of abusive drugs. Screening is economical for discounting drug usage in most samples, though a positive requires confirmation for legal acceptance. Any samples that return a presumptive positive result in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

When Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at a far lower concentration compared to other techniques (like urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug testing notably complex.

Confirmation for any screened positive result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Each presumptive positive sample undergoes a wash before confirmation if necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection span: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use history up to 90 days, while urine tests cover a shorter time frame.
  • Difficulty in evasion: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers historical insight: It can show a drug use pattern over time, not simply recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become discernible in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In West Samoset, FL, hair follicle testing outperforms traditional urine tests in many aspects. With superior detection accuracy, hair tests are not only more reliable but also offer a thorough examination that urine tests often lack, especially over extended periods.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
