In White Springs, Florida, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair testing for both drugs and alcohol, our centers are conveniently located in cities across the nation. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required, and can be from the head or body. We offer a range of testing options tailored to detect various substances.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity in recent years as an effective method for substance screening. This approach is preferred by many employers, judiciary systems, and Substance Abuse specialists over the traditional urine tests. Employers with strict anti-drug policies or individuals on probation rely on hair testing for its extended detection window, which can be up to 90 days. It's conducted under observation, making it difficult to falsify. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the preferable option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a long-term record of substance use by trapping biomarkers within its growing fibers. Taken close to the scalp, hair can offer an estimated 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising about 200 hair strands (around the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation tests. For more comprehensive panels like EtG add-ons or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, the equivalent quantity of body hair may be gathered. The term "head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing drug test results involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial handling of a sample into the lab's system. This step verifies proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary, rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method to eliminate drug use in the majority of samples, any positive findings require confirmation for legal submission. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive in the Screening phase, further hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations than other techniques (like urine or oral fluid), highlighting the challenges of hair drug screening.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before Confirmation as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accredited according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, compared to the shorter span of urine tests.
  • Difficulty in sabotage: It's notably hard to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring greater accuracy of results.
  • Chronological data: It presents a timeline of drug use over extended periods, surpassing just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot determine recent usage: Detecting drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth rates can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," the examination actually assesses the hair strand and not the follicle itself beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in White Springs, FL

The increased detection period of hair testing positions it superior to urine tests, as it provides a history of substance use extending up to three months. This long window of detection offers a more comprehensive view of an individual's drug usage pattern, surpassing the limited scope of urine tests.

Hair testing minimizes potential for sabotage, thus assuring employers they receive genuine results. Furthermore, its effectiveness in identifying substance issues presents a solid case over traditional urine tests, resulting in more informed employment decisions.

Extended Detection Window

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
