Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle substance testing services in Wilton Manors, Florida. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise lies in hair examinations, available at testing centers in cities across the nation. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Hair tests can be processed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom options.

Recently, drug testing protocols have increasingly incorporated hair follicle exams. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored for strict no-drug policies, judicial requirements, and probationers. They offer a prolonged detection window, usually up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making it hard to manipulate. However, for drug use in the past 5 days, urine tests still offer higher precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the emerging hair strand. When clipped near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month detection range for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, moderately challenging to deceive, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hairs (around the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable volume of body hair can be collected. When referencing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four core steps in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary processing of a specimen into a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigns a randomized LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra data entry not fulfilled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial expedited assessment for drugs. Although Screening is a cost-efficient measure to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples that are preliminarily positive in Screening require an additional confirmation.

For samples with presumptive positives at the Screening stage, more hair is taken from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a substantially lower concentration compared to other techniques (like urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most intricate methodology to perform.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The comprehensive lab sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, compared to the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Challenging to tamper with: It is highly challenging to subvert a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to be present in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly compared to other drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Attributes like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the test itself scrutinizes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Wilton Manors, FL, hair follicle testing is becoming increasingly preferred over traditional urine testing due to distinct advantages. Extended detection windows allow for a more comprehensive review of substance use history. These tests can identify drug use up to 90 days prior, surpassing urine tests, which typically detect substances only within a few days after use.

Beyond extended detection, hair testing is also less prone to tampering. Reliability and accuracy set it apart, ensuring that results remain consistent and trustworthy. While traditional urine tests offer limited windows and potential for tampering, hair follicle tests provide an accurate and comprehensive perspective that many employers favor for maintaining a drug-free workplace.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Wilton Manors, FL provides an extended detection window handling up to 90 days of substance use history, far surpassing other drug testing methods. This capability empowers employers to gain a broader understanding of an individual's drug use behavior over three months, unlike short-term methods like urine testing.

The comprehensive scope of hair testing is ideal for assessing long-term patterns of drug use, making it highly effective for those implementing rigorous screening. Whether monitoring employees or candidates, this approach offers a solid basis for evaluation, granting an extensive overview of each individual's substance use background over a considerably extended period.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle testing in Wilton Manors, FL offers peace of mind, significantly reducing the possibility of sample adulteration. Unlike urine tests, which can potentially be manipulated through various means, hair samples are nearly impossible to alter undetected.

This high resistance to tampering makes hair testing a trustworthy option for organizations aiming to guarantee the integrity of their screening processes. By relying on a method that offers dependable and unaltered results, employers can rest assured about the authenticity of the data collected, ensuring confidence and assurance in the outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
