Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Winter Beach, Florida. Need to undergo a drug or alcohol hair test? At Accredited Drug Testing, hair testing is our specialty, and we have facilities nationwide for testing. Generally, hair from the crown or body needs to be between 1.5 to 2 inches for accurate testing. Hair analysis can include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

Recently, drug testing practices are increasingly favoring hair follicle methods. Employers, judiciary systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests instead of traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance for drugs, courts, and probation programs often require these tests. The main advantage is a detection window that extends up to 90 days, ensuring reliability as it is almost impossible to tamper with. However, for detecting drugs used in the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected from the scalp area, hair can reveal substance use for up to roughly three months. Hair is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample sized at 1.5 inches, amounting to approximately 200 hair strands (similar to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to have 150mg of the sample. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable quantity of body hair is an option. "Head hair" specifically means scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Procedure Summary

The quartet of primary phases in laboratory evaluation of drug tests comprises Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial sample handling in a lab’s system. This phase ensures the sample’s secure sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drug presence. Although cost-efficient for ruling out drug use across most samples, a positive outcome requires further confirmation for legal acceptability. Presumed positive results from Screening necessitate additional verification.

Should a sample test positive in the Screening phase, more hair is retrieved from the initial sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations than in alternatives such as urine or saliva, demonstrating why hair drug testing is complex.

Confirmation of any positive result in screening employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples that test positive are cleansed before confirmation as required. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is certified under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Hair Drug Testing Benefits:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests can detect substance use for a period of up to 90 days, unlike the shorter window of urine tests.
  • Challenging to deceive: Negating a hair drug test is highly difficult, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical usage data: It reveals a pattern of drug use across time, not just recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become traceable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and growth rate variations can influence the levels of drug metabolites found in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is actually conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Winter Beach, FL, hair follicle testing is decidedly superior to urine tests. Key benefits include enhanced detection periods and significantly greater accuracy. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
