In World Golf Village, Florida, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. If a hair or alcohol screening is needed, our specialty in hair tests is supported by centers across all major cities in the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be evaluated. These tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained prevalence as a method for substance screenings. More employers, courts, and Substance Abuse counselors prefer this over standard urine testing. This choice aligns with zero-tolerance policies, court requirements, and probation parameters. Its primary advantage is detecting drug usage up to 90 days, with an observed collection method making it hard to manipulate, whereas urine tests show use within the last 5 days more accurately.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended overview of substance use by encapsulating markers within the developing hair fibers. When taken from near the scalp, hair can reveal usage of alcohol and other substances for up to around 3 months. The collection process is straightforward, it's relatively hard to adulterate, and it ships with ease.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of about 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil) from the closest point to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and validation. For EtG extensions and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair isn’t available, similar quantities of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we refer purely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory assessment of a drug test result incorporates these four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial induction of a sample into a laboratory's regimen. This stage ensures proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any essential data entry lacking in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as a preliminary inspection for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly approach to eliminate drug intake in most cases, positive indications necessitate corroboration for legal validity. Any samples that register as presumptively positive during Screening require subsequent verification.

If an initial Screening indicates a presumptive positive, further hair is extracted from the original sample and processed for Extraction. At this phase, substances are removed from hair at significantly lesser concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most complex method to execute.

Verification of any affirmative Screening outcome occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample undergoes cleansing before confirmation if needed. The entire lab routine from Accessioning to Confirmation falls under the scrutiny of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair testing can identify substance use for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests that exhibit a narrower detection duration.
  • Difficulty to tamper with: Hair drug tests are notably resistant to tampering, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Delivers historical insight: It illustrates habitual drug consumption over time, not just recent ingestion.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying current use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs compared to alternative testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Attributes like hair color and personal growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
