Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough services for hair follicle drug analyses in Wright, Florida. If a hair drug or alcohol analysis is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in such testing, with facilities available in all cities across the country to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. These assessments include drug detection, alcohol/ETG, or other specified options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly integrated hair follicle assessments. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts are often opting for hair drug tests instead of traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are ideal for employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, court mandates, and probationary procedures. The advantage of hair follicle tests is their extended detection reach of up to 90 days, conducted under supervision, making tampering difficult. Yet, for detecting usage in the prior 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a notable method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive record of substances by encasing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When samples are taken near the scalp, a detection period for drugs and alcohol can extend to roughly three months. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing around 200 strands (approximating the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale for accurate measurement. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types, such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results is composed of four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning initiates the laboratory processing system for a sample. This step ensures the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for the presence of drugs. Although Screening is an economical means to potentially exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result needs affirmation to be deemed valid in a legal context. Presumed positive samples from Screening require further confirmation.

For a presumptive positive outcome in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction stage. Drugs are isolated from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug testing processes.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Samples identified as presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory sequence, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is overseen per the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Detection of drug use can last up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a limited timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, enhancing the accuracy of outcomes.
  • Offers chronological data: Provides insights into drug consumption patterns over time, beyond recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: It takes roughly 5-7 days before drugs become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence metabolite concentrations.

Note: Commonly named "hair follicle tests", these tests actually examine the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Wright, FL, hair follicle testing outperforms traditional urine tests with its remarkable accuracy and reliability. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
