Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Youngstown, Florida. In need of a hair drug or alcohol test? Our team specializes in hair analysis with testing centers available in cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. Hair tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored to specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly common in drug testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often opt for hair testing over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are ideal for employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation cases. The key advantage is a longer drug detection window, usually up to 90 days, with observations ensuring accuracy and security, though urine tests remain best for recent drug use detection within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft, hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and drugs. Collected near the scalp, it can provide a detection window spanning up to 3 months for substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and conveniently shipped.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the size of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional panels, and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. It's recommended to measure the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a corresponding quantity of body hair may be collected. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair exclusively. Body hair refers to all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Procedure Summary

The laboratory processing of a drug test result entails four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry if not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary quick assessment for drug presence. Although Screening is a cost-effective approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples with a presumptive positive Screening outcome need secondary confirmation.

For samples with a presumptive positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair from the original specimen is prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is among the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • High resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Chronological data provision: It reveals a pattern of drug usage over time, not merely recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors including hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often described as "hair follicle tests," the test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Comparing hair follicle tests to traditional urine tests showcases superior detection in Youngstown, FL. Hair tests are more accurate, able to detect substances for up to 90 days. This extends the detection timeline considerably as urine tests only reflect recent use.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
