Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Abbeville, Georgia. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, featuring facilities throughout the nation that can carry out hair tests. Generally, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head's crown, but body hair might be used. Tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored testing options.

Recently, drug testing has increasingly employed hair follicle methods. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over the traditional urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, legal entities, and individuals on probation often utilize these tests. Among the key advantages is a longer detection window, extending up to 90 days, combined with an observed collection process that is extremely difficult to tamper with. Nevertheless, for detection of drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a strong method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extensive record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the hair fibers as it grows. If hair is collected near the scalp, it can provide a detection period of up to about 3 months for drugs and alcohol. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil’s thickness) nearest to the scalp offers 100mg of hair, which is an optimal sample size for testing and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. It is advised to measure the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair is acceptable. When mentioning head hair, it refers solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result comprises four main phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial processing step, ensuring the sample is correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry that isn’t automatically inputted through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening carries out a preliminary rapid evaluation for drugs. Although Screening efficiently identifies the absence of drug use in most samples, a positive result needs verification for any legal proceedings. Samples with a probable positive result in Screening require further confirmation.

If Screening implies a sample may be positive, additional hair is sourced from the initial sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from the hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting hair testing's complexity.

Confirmation of any positive screening is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with a probable positive outcome are washed before confirmation, as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair categorization and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection time frame: Hair drug tests detect drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter time frame.
  • Testing integrity: Hair drug tests are challenging to falsify, thus ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical drug usage data: It outlines a timeline of drug consumption, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Undetectable recent use: It takes about 5-7 days post-consumption for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Higher cost: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Outcomes may differ due to factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates influencing drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis evaluates the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Abbeville, GA
Hair follicle testing offers a superior alternative to urine tests, particularly evident in the advanced detection capabilities seen in Abbeville. The method's superior detection accuracy and reliability make it an optimal choice for employers and legal systems aiming for thorough substance monitoring. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
