Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Alamo, Georgia. Whether you require testing for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing is a hair testing specialist, with facilities across all cities nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is typically sufficient. Hair evaluations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific testing needs.

In recent times, drug testing methods increasingly incorporate hair follicle drug tests. Courts, employers, and Substance Abuse experts now favor hair tests over traditional urine analysis. Those with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation programs rely on hair follicle tests due to their main benefit: an extended detection period of up to 90 days. Collection is observed, deterring cheating attempts. However, urine tests remain more dependable for drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and other drugs by encasing biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer up to a roughly 3-month detection window for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to adulterate, and straightforward to ship.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 strands of hair (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, the perfect sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG add-ons and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is preferred. We suggest weighing the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent amount of body hair may be gathered. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair comprises all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal phases involved in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory’s system. This step includes verifying that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not present in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a swift preliminary check for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be permissible in court. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is tentatively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is drawn from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All tentatively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if required. The whole laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceptionally difficult, leading to more accurate results.
  • Offers historical data: Provides a pattern of drug usage over some time, not just immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to be detected in hair.
  • Expenses: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Variables like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: While often known as "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle below the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over traditional urine tests in Alamo, GA. Its superior detection accuracy ensures reliable results, significantly reducing false positives or negatives. Unlike urine tests, which are limited to detecting recent use, hair tests reveal a more comprehensive picture of an individual's substance history, making them an excellent choice for those requiring thorough drug use analysis.

Extended Detection Window

With an extended detection window of up to 90 days, hair follicle testing in Alamo, GA, provides employers with a detailed view of an individual's substance use history. Unlike shorter-term methods, such as urine tests, hair testing captures a wider substance history. This comprehensive approach assists employers in assessing the long-term behavior of applicants or current employees, contributing to a safer workplace.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
